WET PLATE PHOTOGRAPHY
In an era when cameras are at every fingertip and gratification feels only a click away, photography has never been more accessible, nor as temporary. For despite the thousands of images uploaded and downloaded every hour, most photos will sadly never see the light of day.
Wet plate photography defies all of that.
Not only do wet plate portraits have a hand-crafted mystical beauty that can never be duplicated by even the most sophisticated of digital effects, every one-of-a-kind plate has a shimmering archival quality that will literally last for hundreds of years.
And to witness first hand a process that faithfully goes back almost two centuries, one can not help but marvel at the unique alchemy that gives sitters a front row seat to what feels like their own moment in history.
A PORTRAIT STUDIO, WITH A TWIST
It's been well over 10 years since I've been so excited to be in the studio.
Old tools tell new tales behind moving layers of color, light, shadow and smoke. Images emerge, some as clear as day, others under fog of night, but each connected in some new-found voice of cold cinematic style and old world charm.
I push a little, then get pulled. Have a vision, then let it dissolve. I return, the driver and the passenger along a new road, consciously unknown.
Friends and faces intersect through the lens to become stories on the other side.
